Make Opening a Blog Easy With One Click of A Button

By Bea Fields

I was on the phone yesterday for 5 hours with folks who were not sure about how to open a WordPress blog AND to get it hosted on their own unique domain name.

Here is the down and dirty of that process.

1) Purchase a domain name. Sites like Go Daddy have pretty low cost domain names, BUT, they have their own blogging template. They don’t have the one click installation for WordPress just yet, and I hope they do soon. So, if you buy a domain name with them, you will need to have it hosted on a site which offers a one click installation feature. Here is the list:

http://whdb.com/types/fantastico/

These sites offer what is called Fantastico, which is a one click installation to allow you to easily install things like blogs, forums, wikis, shopping carts, FAQ systems and so forth. I use Dreamhost, but they now have their own one-click installation for WordPress (not Fantastico). It is also super easy to use!

2) Move your domain hosting to one of the sites which offers the one-click installation feature for WordPress

3) Go inside your cPanel. This is usually http://yourdomain.com/cpanel. Install WordPress using the instructions provided by your hosting company.

4) Once your site is live, you will go to your domain and then sign up to become the administrator for your blog. Once you have signed on, WordPress will go live on your site.

5) Once your blog is up, if you want to add a new theme, you follow these instructions:

  • Find a theme you like on the web
  • Download the theme. You will see it download as a zip folder
  • Open the zip folder and move the actual WordPress file folder to your Desktop or to My Documents
  • Go into your cpanel OR use an FTP server like FileZilla to open your domain where your blog is now hosted
  • Inside your blog files, locate the wp-content folder and then locate the themes folder
  • Open the themes folder
  • Move the theme you saved to My Documents over to your themes folder on your blog
  • Go into your WordPress blog, locate the new theme and choose to activate it. The activation button is in the right top corner of your blog

I hope this has been helpful.
